Mary Ntembenuzeni’s Holiday Recipe
In a country like Malawi—one of the poorest on earth with an average annual income of just $815—it’s hard to build a better life. But that’s exactly what Mary Ntembenuzeni has done.
And it all began with her first FINCA loan of $1, which she invested in a tiny bakery business operated out of her home. She used her second loan of $24 to buy three ovens … and she hasn’t looked back since!
As her bakery grew, she was able to purchase land, where she built a modest but comfortable home and two modern shops. She also bought a motor vehicle and successfully educated her children. One of her children even graduated from a nursing program!
When you enjoy her traditional Malawian treat, you can think of Mary and all the other once-poor women who have built a brighter future for their children thanks to your support for FINCA.
Traditional Malawian Mandasi
- 2 cups flour (all-purpose wheat flour)
- Pinch of salt
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 beaten egg
- 1 cup milk or water
- Vegetable oil
Mix flour, salt, and baking powder in a bowl. Add sugar, egg, and milk and beat until smooth. Drop spoonfuls of the batter into hot vegetable oil and fry until golden brown, turning once. Drain and enjoy!
It’s a simple recipe. And so is the recipe to create brighter futures for people like Mary. Give more hardworking entrepreneurs like Mary the one opportunity they need to build a better life for themselves and their families.
